Hi all, I'm adding my desktop pc after a clean reinstall of windows. The only problem is that I get this error message, where it tells me that there is no mapping between the account names and security identifiers (SIDs). Does anyone know how to help me? It's the first time I've seen this message and I can't find solutions online that work

Hi,

The error message you're encountering may stem from several scenarios but it most commonly occurs when there is a discrepancy between an account SID referenced in the system and the actual existing SIDs. Other reasons could be if you've recently re-installed your OS but are trying to connect to the server with an old account, or if a problem surfaced in the process of account SID assignment.

Here's a step-by-step guideline on how to potentially solve your issue:

1. Check the Account: Start by checking for any discrepancies between the accounts on your PC and the domain. You can do this by going to 'Control Panel' -> 'User Accounts'. Make sure the account you're trying to connect to the domain with exists and is spelled correctly.

2. Clean the Credentials: If the account seems to be fine, it might be helpful to clean out any old credentials you have stored on your PC. Press the Win key + R to open the run window, type 'rundll32.exe keymgr.dll, KRShowKeyMgr' and press enter. Here you can remove all saved credentials.

3. Rejoin the Domain: If the error continues, try to rejoin the domain. To do this, go to 'System Properties', click 'Change Settings' next to the computer name, select 'Change...' and rename your computer if you wish, choose 'Workgroup', type a name for the Workgroup, and then restart your computer. After the restart, follow these same steps but instead of 'Workgroup', choose 'Domain' and input your domain name then restart again.

Remember, before doing this, ensure you have the necessary permissions to make these changes and know the admin username and password.

4. Repair SIDs: If the error remains, there might be a problem with the SID on your PC. You can repair this by using the Sysprep tool which is built into Windows. Run 'sysprep.exe' from 'C:\Windows\System32\Sysprep', set 'System Cleanup Action' to 'Enter System Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE)', tick 'Generalize' then choose 'Shutdown' under 'Shutdown Options'. After the PC shuts down, boot it up and follow the prompts.

Keep in mind, using Sysprep will remove your installed apps and settings, and bring your system back to a default state. So, ensure to backup your important data beforehand.

If none of the above solutions work, I suggest reaching out to a specialist or your domain admin for more help as it could be a more complex issue.

I hope one of these solutions helps you. If you have further questions or issues, please reply below. I'll be happy to help!

If you're not a member of domain admins nor the original joiner of this device (assuming you renamed the new device to match an existing account) a failure like this will occur. The simplest solution would be to delete the computer object out of AD and then join to the domain.
