Windows XP Arguably the best operating system released by Microsoft. Discuss exactly what it is that makes Windows XP the best operating system; even in comparison to its superiors

Default Backgraded to XP from Vista

Okay my current laptop came with Vista installed. I hated it. Nothing worked correctly. It crashed frequently and so much of my existing software conflicted with it.

So I backgraded to XP Pro and it's much better now. I think I'll leave it this way as long as I can.

I read that this downgrade could be done but I'd like to know how easy it was for you to do. Was it Vista's learning curve that was your greatest challenge or compatibility with what you had (software/hardware) before?

How exactly do you get this done? Do you have to buy a CD from Windows, or is it something you can download from the internet? I feel like if you bought a Windows laptop and want to backgrade that it should be free, but they might not agree with me of course.

I agree that it should be free, but it isn't. If you previously bought XP-I mean bought a full version rather than the OEM version that comes with a machine, then you are ok to use that. But otherwise you'll need to buy it.

Every computer I have ever bought has come with a disk for the operating system. I just save every one of them on the chance that I might need one later. Right now I have Windows 98, XP and Vista all on disk so I can choose if needed. I'm looking around for a couple computers now that I want to pick up used for some kids so they will most likely get reformatted and XP put into them.

I saved a disk from my previous computer, so when none of my current work related software worked at all with stupid Vista, I just grabbed the old disk I'd kept from last time and installed that one instead. MUCH better.

You see, that's why I'm afraid of doing the Vista thing. I'm no expert at these things and I'm afraid that Vista might be incompatible with some of my legacy stuff. My laptop came with XP installled so I don't have the full version to use. That's a bummer.

Yeah, recently my computers have all been laptops that came with the OS already installed, so I don't have disks to work with. Even if I did, I don't feel confident enough doing it when my new laptops have the "Windows Vista" logo on them...I worry that I won't do something right or that it won't work with XP and then I can never go back.

Lucky for me, Vista hasn't posed any major problems with my programs.
