Default Windows Update Not Working

I reformatted my laptop a few weeks ago. Ever since then Windows Update is not functioning properly. The yellow icon with the exclamation on the lower right tab shows up fine. The icon would say "Downloading %0", be stuck there for a good 30 minutes, and then disappear. Nothing gets done. I've tried to Microsoft.com to do an express download and I've found out that all previous updates have failed.

I need any help and advice I can get, thank you.

Running:
Windows XP Media Center
Service Pack 2

Have you tried turning the auto update off, and then just grabbing the updates needed from the windows update website they have? I had mine once stuck similar to this (but my % never showed up at all, not even to tell me 0) and going through the website worked for me, then a reboot and all was peachy again.

I would do exactly what tanner said. Go into the control panel, auto updates, and disable that option. Then get everything down that you need, reboot, and turn it back on again. Then see in a few days whether anything comes back down.

Default Someone help me!!!

Hi, I really need some help, and soon
I was trying to get my speaker system to work, and I flipped the switch on the power strip that my computer is plugged into. The computer shut down, and when I turned it back on, the login screen was different. It was the normal blue one before, with the users displayed so you can click on one and enter your password, but now it is a box, and you have to type in the username AND password!!! Someone help me, My mom is gonna be soooo mad at me...
