Default New owner

Hello,

I have been given a working computer with Win Xp installed on the hard drive. It is the same copy of windows the previous owner used and I intend to use and update it. So my question is - is it necessary to re-registrar or reactivate windows or anything legal like that? Since the same copy of windows is still on the original machine I am thinking the license should still be valid.

Which brings me to a second related question. I have changed the "registered owner" in the registry as someone suggested to me and I have changed the admin account to my own. The previous owner's name still appears in the documents and settings and on the task manager in the user name column. I assume there is someplace to change this setting other than what I have already tried. Do I need Microsoft to register me as the new owner of Windows?

Thanks,
