Default Getting into User Accounts

What options does a person have if they need to get into a Windows user account and don't have the password? I'm sure that there have been situations where someone passed away and had important information on the computer, and others needed to get into the account. What can be done in a case like this?

I am thinking that if the person know the answers to the security questions then that will help, other than that I don't think they would allow access.

Hmmm...that just doesn't bode well for people who don't use the security questions. I remember when I dropped my laptop off to a tech support dest at my college that they had to call me and ask for my password to work on the computer, saying they couldn't get in without it. I was surprised that "techies" didn't know of some way to get in, but maybe that's not as surprising as I thought...

There are ways of doing it yes. There are utilities that will override or disable passwords, and I'm surprised a tech place wouldn't have one.

Good to know! I would be surprised, but it wasn't exactly the most "advanced" college tech lab around, so it's not too shocking to me that they didn't have something to override it.

What OS are you running? These type of things can be OS dependent.
