Default Scanner that "works" but doesn't

I have a scanner that is getting rather old, but still works fine. My problem is getting it to work on my XP computer! I have downloaded the drivers (no longer have the original disk) from different locations, checked and rechecked connections, etc...and it just won't work. It says that it is not there. What am I doing wrong??

Without being able to get my hands on it I couldn't really tell you. Have you tried removing the current drivers before putting the new ones in? Rebooting in between?

What type of connection does it have? I'm guessing a serial connection and it may be something you need to set up in your control panel. I know my computer doesn't have a serial printer port and you may have the same problem. Check and see if this is the case.

You may also try and email the maker of the device to see if they can help.

Thanks for your answers. Yes, I have uninstalled and reinstalled. I have even installed it on a brand new computer, and it worked once and then after that it said it wasn't there! It has a USB port connection. The computer I originally put it on didn't even have one, I had to get a converter for it. There is no fraying to the cord and nothign looks broken. The software homepage doesn't have the driver on it anymore, I have to get it from secondary sources. I am wondering if they are simply not complete drivers.
