Default How to back up system?

You would think I would know how to do this as long as I've been on the computer but this is one thing I haven't done. I am using Vista and I want to do a complete back up of my system just in case I ever need it. My understanding is that I can use that to reinstall if I ever need to reformat, right? That way I don't have to re-install all the separate programs plus I won't lose any of my documents and stuff. Am I right in how that goes and if so, how do I do that? I want to back up to DVDs so it won't take too many.
