From time to time, I have had to export files from a text document into excel in order to manipulate the figures. On several occasions I have been slowed down because the data is still being read as text instead of figure even after I have reformatted it.

I'm really not sure what your problem is. Do you mean you are taking a list of say prices from Word into Excel to run a sum of them and its not working because its still text? I've never really exported between much but it would seem to me its more than a formatting problem and perhaps something different. Even as numbers they are still text, just text that is given a variable so that you can run equations on them...

If you import as a .csv (comma separated value) file then it will recognize them better. Are you creating it as a text file in note pad or is it somewhere else?
Have you tried to copy and paste instead of importing? You can copy and paste and it will recognize the number as a number. There are a lot of places on the web that you can find Excel help. George |
