I hear so many people talk about the rave of Firefox and how its so amazing since it has tabs. I am really starting to wonder where these people came from.
Since when hasn't the latest IE had tabs and work better for business relation sites than FF. I have used FF and I don't anymore for this exact reason - its a memory hog still, even on a quick machine. Anyone else here with me?

Nope. IE7 does have tabs now, but you can't even pretend Firefox hasn't had them for much longer. I Beta tested IE7 and that was the one thing I enjoyed the most but it kills my older computer. Firefox doesn't slog along in the same manner, especially the new release.

No, sorry, you're on your own. Firefox had tabs more than four years ago, and that is what is amazing. When IE was still dragging it's feet and eating up all your system resources, FF ran like a dream.
This current version of FF has problems, but those have been addressed in version 3-which is now in beta release. It runs fantastic, like in the old days. IE was way, way behind the times when it finally got tabs. ETA; The only reason IE works better for certain business sites is because those sites are badly designed. FF is W3C compliant where as IE is not. IE forgives all kinds of sloppy design errors-FF shows them as errors and won't show the page properly. Business specifically code pages to reject FF and other browsers. That's why the likes of Opera have an option to identify themselves to websites as IE. And surprise, surprise! They run the page just fine 90% of the time-meaning that IE is NOT needed, and not some special answer for business. Those sites just reject browsers identifying themselves as not being IE. Purple, have you beta tested any other MS stuff? Last edited by Flumpet; 06-16-2008 at 02:48 AM. |

A beta release is one thing but when its proven well without anything funky I will poke around with it more, right now I have been popping between FF, IE & Safari for some chuckles.
Flumpet I don't agree with your "the only reason IE works better", its not if a site is designed for IE only, its actual applications that are based for cooperate world, not just FF users (which most looking at it, are for personal preference, not cooperation applications). It doesnt matter who thinks what, until you can find a way to change the minds of those with the money that make the big bucks, your either gonna see an error or your going to see a page depending on what you use. I'm not saying I like one or the other better I'm saying use what you can for what you need, its really not that hard. |

Wow I caused quite a stir. Let me start of by stating that I was one of the first beta testers when Firefox first came out long ago and I had no issues with it until I started doing certain things online that require IE. Either by the site I visit or the place of work I am at and need IE to show exactly what that site was coded for. I can not control how others code their sites so as a viewer if its work related its IE. I can still use FF but until the beta is over of ver3 I'm not just to be on the safe side.

Give me FF any time. If I'm not mistaken, Netscape had tabs before IE as well. I think FF is definitely easier to use and it is easier to configure than IE. I'm stuck at work using IE and hate it until I can get back home. Does IE now have tabs? Sure but tabs are just a small part of what I look for in my browser and in my mind FF beats it.

Even though IE might be more popular, and that might be arguable, FF does work very well - and has for a long time. The resource issues with FF are about being fixed in the latest release and then IE will simply be uncompetitive. I still use both browsers though.

If I am not mistaken, browser tabs originated in the Mozilla browser first.
Opera has also featured tabs for a long time, but I don't know how long that has been. The latest internet explorer version is pretty good, but I still prefer both Opera and Firefox over it. |

Actually tabs originated in 1997 in the NetCaptor browser. FF is more than just tabs. It has security features, and always has that are way more versatile than IE. Opera is prettier but FF is more functional.

I remember going from IE to go download Netscape and used that up until the very first legit (non-bugged) release of Moz came out, I then went to FF and was with it for many years. My entire post was in regards to business uses IE only code wise, so people are stuck with it. So even if I am stuck with it for work (at work always, and at home for work related things I need to check up on) I use IE. I'm not like a full on M$ lover or anything, I have only been using IE for the past 2 years and only for work related things. I was one of the front runners back in the day yelling for FF to go on, but when I cant use FF for something I will use IE its that simple. Never meant to turn this into a debate or anything.
