I know back in the day people used to use ICQ because it was stable, but as it became "cute" like some of the other messengers I stopped using it. I still see it listed in forum profiles some places through. How popular is it these days?

Not a great deal that I am aware of. Long ago I had one of the shortest ICQ #'s around and its been many moons since I could remember that password. I try and just stick with what I need, sometimes I get distracted with IM's and they just need to go away you know.

Oh wow, ICQ! I used that a bit some years back, when it was still fairly popular.
The last time I even touched that thing must have been around 2002 or 2003! My Trillian program supports ICQ, but I have no reason to use it anymore. Every person I used to talk to on ICQ has long since abandoned it for whatever reason. That isn't to say I wouldn't use it again, if I had a reason to. |

I remember back in the early 2000's - everyone had ICQ. I got it just because no one seemed to be using anything else at the time. I'm not much of an instant messager anyway so I just kind of drifted away from it. Now, the only one I use (rarely) is AIM since I have really no use for instant messaging on a
regular basis. |

It's funny to think about how popular ICQ was for a while, especially when you look at it now.
Some people still use it of course, but AIM and MSN seem to be taking over a lot of ICQ's former market share. For a while, I even think ICQ was like the most popular program out there! Kinda sad to think about in a way. |

There was only one brief period in my life when I used ICQ. When I was in uni, all the ports were blocked for messengers and we couldn't install a messenger even if we could find a port. ICQ had a browser based version that we could get through on the HTTP port, so we used that.
Otherwise, I hated the thing. |

I think I still have a number around somewhere but haven't used it in years. I have found that most of my friends prefer MSN or Yahoo because they say they are easier and more friendly to use. It really doesn't matter to me as I can use them all but couldn't see keeping ICQ around if there was no one I could talk to.

ICQ revamped at some point, I think around 2002ish perhaps, and became much closer to MSN in the interface. I've got a nice low number as well (three digits or four) but I haven't used it in ages. They never really shook the "geeky" image which is daunting to some people. Most people do seem to use the unholy trinity of AIM/MSN/Yahoo these days.
