I was thinking how many there are out there today and was trying to think which was the first. I know MSN and Yahoo and been around a while but I think the first was AIM. Does anyone know?

I am honestly not sure what the first modern instant messanging program is, but
talk (software) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia was one of the earliest that I could find any information on. Talk debuted in 1982, and was supposedly the first program which allowed more than 2 users to talk to each other at once, which would mark the beginning of what we today know as chat rooms. Besides that I don't know. |

I would have thought that various chat rooms were around early on, but my memory tells me something like ICQ being the first. That was why, with its cumbersome number ID and horrible set up, it was so popular.
