If you import as a .csv (comma separated value) file then it will recognize them better. Are you creating it as a text file in note pad or is it somewhere else?

Have you tried to copy and paste instead of importing? You can copy and paste and it will recognize the number as a number. There are a lot of places on the web that you can find Excel help.
